The Barn

     There is a small, but dazzling gem of a venue hidden in Fulton, NY. It's called "The Barn," and if you are a Central New Yorker who enjoys locally-grown art and underground music, it's a place you should know about.

     The property is owned by Glenn and Caytlyn Prior, and they have been holding barn shows since 2003. They put on four or five shows each year between spring and fall. Artists set up their work on the lawn or hang it up on surrounding structures; music happens in the barn and usually starts around nightfall. 

     The 2014 season has already begun with the May 10th show. It was a great show, with the highlight for me being the return of indie-rock/comic book artist, Jeffrey Lewis. He is currently working with Heather Wagner and Caitlin Gray as "Jeffrey Lewis and the Jrams", and they all rocked pretty darn hard. Jeffrey combines music and art in his "films" which are usually aimed at telling historical stories from a different perspective. Here, he is pictured performing a science-fiction film called, "Creeping Brain."

     Admission is under $10 and party-goers are encouraged to bring tents, stay for the night, and enjoy themselves responsibly. Children and animals are also welcome as long as they are being attended to.

     Original artists and musicians in the area who are seeking exposure (and aren't we all?) should look upon The Barn as an extremely valuable resource. I have attended shows as an audience member and a performer, and had incredible experiences on both sides of the stage. My partner, Michael, has pulled the Ultimate Barn Hat Trick as he has also shown art at The Barn. This is a great venue run by great people.
